La Vielle Auberge

How often do you go to the trouble of planning an evening out, and end up disappointed? Not so at La Vieille Auberge. Owner/Chef Hubert Bielman and his wife Susan have created an intimate atmosphere here. The 1800's building creates a great backdrop for the antique décor. Upon arrival we were promptly greeted and escorted to our table. Seating capacity is 55, including the little café next door. Reservations are recommended. The staff was quite friendly and helpful, detailing their extensive list of specials.

To start, an array of hot and cold appetizers. We choose the salad Auberge - quite tasty - and the steamed mussels which were excellent. They do not rush you so there is lots of time for relaxing conversation. Don't come expecting a quick meal. This is not fast food as your taste buds will tell you. Chef Hubert Bielman chooses local seasonal products whenever possible to ensure freshness. We enjoyed Rack of Lamb and the Grilled Chicken, served with button mushrooms, and lemon and pine nuts glazed in a light sauce. Both meals were accompanied by potato or pasta with an assortment of fall vegetables, and were delicious. Relaxing with coffee after, we gave into the temptation of fresh pastries filled with custard, served with cream and drizzled with chocolate. The perfect light ending to our meal!

Meals average $50-$60/person including drinks, appetizers, entrées, coffee and dessert. Alternately, La Vieille Auberge offers two inclusive meals which include a choice of featured appetizers and entrées, coffee and dessert for $37.50. The portions were satisfying and the presentation was very appealing. While the prices are not the lowest, considering the amount of times I've been disappointed in a meal I would have to say it was well worth the cost and the experience. We did have to wait a bit for our bill, although I think there must have been some problem which caused the delay. Never the less we will be back to La Vieille Auberge. It is a lovely spot for a special occasion or a well deserved treat.

La Vieille Auberge is located on the east side of highway #7 heading north into Rockwood.
