Plan the area to be landscaped with containers with an aerial sketch. Plot corners, steps, focal points or privacy areas that would be using containers. Consider the size and overall shape of each container for each space it will occupy. Spacious and high areas can be filled with groupings of containers, such as a pot with tall grass on the ground, and a hanging basket with trailing English ivy overhead. Large containers can be used for focal points.

Tips
• Choose plants that share similar growing conditions. Use impatiens, ferns and fuchsia to create a pot for a shady location.

• Choose a theme for all the pots. A similar colour or pattern for all the pots that compliment or match the exterior of the house, decking or patio will highlight and not overpower the space.

• Use a hanging basket and container fertilizer that contains an osmocote "slow release" fertilizer. This will releases the fertilizer at the right soil temperature and moisture content and will benefit the plants.

• Soil additives such as water gel will retain moisture in the container and will help reduce maintenance.

• Create a water feature in large waterproof pots. Grow water plants.

• Remember most containers move easily. Switch positioning around to achieve new looks throughout the season.
